Fanal Forest sits high in the mountains of Madeira, where ancient laurisilva trees — some over 500 years old — emerge from near-constant cloud and mist to create one of the most otherworldly landscapes on Earth. The laurisilva forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last surviving remnants of a forest type that once covered much of Southern Europe.
